When I first heard about the ‘men’s rights’ movement, I kind of wanted to like it. I wanted to hear some intelligent opinions about some of the ways that our culture negatively portrays and stereotypes men, or about rapes in prison and perhaps some theories on why it occurs… but what I’ve found basically boils down to the idea that MRAs seem to think that women’s rights somehow negate the rights of men. They seem to think that pointing out how women are negatively portrayed in the media, or raising awareness about rape against women, somehow negates the struggles of men (because men are raped and stereotyped). What they can’t seem to deal with is that women want something to be solely about their problems; MRAs can’t handle that feminism doesn’t also talk about the bad things that happen to men.
